You want the spot covered before you leave, and you still want makeup on. A thin hydrocolloid spot patch can sit under makeup for the day. A thick overnight disc usually shows. Makeup underneath the patch is a common reason it peels off by lunch.
Hydrocolloid is the cheap round sticker, roughly 15–40p a patch. It collects fluid from a whitehead, an open spot, or anything already weeping. It does not flatten a closed bump. It will not sort anything deep, painful, cystic, or recurring. That is a GP visit. If you are still choosing a format, start with hydrocolloid vs microdart.
Dry skin first, makeup second
Wash the spot with water or a plain cleanser. Pat it dry and wait until that bit of skin feels dry, not damp. Skip moisturiser, serum, oil, primer, SPF, and foundation on that exact spot. You can still do the rest of your face around it.
Peel a thin disc, centre it, and press the rim for a few seconds. The edge needs to land on dry skin. If the first one folds, bin it and take another. A crumpled disc will not seal, and makeup will find the gap.
Give the sticker a minute, then do your makeup. Foundation, concealer, or powder goes over the patch, or you leave that spot bare. It does not go underneath. Anything slippery under the disc is why it lifts. Dry skin and pressing the rim are in the overnight apply guide. Daytime is the same stick, with a sponge instead of a pillow.
Use a thin disc, not last night’s thick one
A thin, clear hydrocolloid can sit under everyday makeup. You may still see a faint rim in good light. That is normal. Cover the spot and leave a little clean skin around the edge. Do not try to hide a thick plaster with layers of foundation.
A thicker overnight disc sits up from the skin. Foundation catches the edge, and by mid-morning it can look obvious even when the middle is still clear. Save that one for bed.
COSRX Master Patch sheets mix sizes, so a smaller disc can sit beside the nose and a slightly larger one on a cheek. Mighty Patch Original is one everyday size, the sort sold at Boots. Either works under makeup if it is thin and the rim is on dry skin. Too small, and the sticky edge sits in the fluid, which makeup will lift.
Pat the makeup on. Do not rub a sponge across the patch or drag a brush over the rim. A light press of powder takes the shine off the plastic. It will not hide a white centre. Cream SPF on the disc creeps under the rim, the same way moisturiser does. Sunscreen belongs on the rest of the face. Keep the patch itself light, or leave that circle bare.
A white middle will show through foundation
Hydrocolloid turns cloudy or white when it collects fluid. Under makeup, that white middle looks like a pale dot. Concealer on top does not turn it skin-coloured. It sits on the plastic and can make the dot easier to see.
If the spot is already weeping, expect that colour during the day. The patch is collecting. The white-centre guide explains it. For a meeting, leave a heavily leaking spot without foundation, or accept the pale dot.
A still-clear disc is not a better sticker. It often means there was little fluid to collect. A closed bump can stay clear all day and look the same. That is the wrong format. The unchanged-bump guide is that morning.
Closed bumps, and patches you should not cover
A closed early bump is not a daytime hydrocolloid job. The cheap disc has nothing to collect. A thinner disc that hides under foundation does not open the bump.
Microdart patches are small dissolving cones for that closed early bump, typically £0.60–£2.50+ each, so check the retailer. Do not put foundation over one. Makeup on top wastes a patch that already costs more than a 15–40p disc. Use the cone in the evening on a clean face, and save the daytime sticker for a spot that has come to a head. Stockists are on the microdart buying page.
Do not pick a spot so the makeup sits flatter. If you already have, a hydrocolloid can cover the open bit. It cannot undo the squeeze. The picked-spot guide is that case.
If the spot is deep, painful, cystic, spreading, or it keeps coming back in the same place, leave the patch and the extra concealer and see a GP.
If the edge lifts during the day
Check the rim once before you leave. If a corner is up and the skin is still dry, press it. If makeup has got under the rim, bin that disc. Put a fresh one on only if you can dry the skin again. Hydrocolloid is single use.
A comfortable patch can stay on through the working day. The usual window is six to twelve hours. If a lifting edge will not reseal, replace it. Do not press fresh powder into the gap.
At home, peel slowly along the skin. Makeup on the rim can tug. If it pulls, wet the edge and wait a few seconds. Bin it. Then wash that spot before you moisturise it.
Where to buy in the UK
Everyday hydrocolloid is the cheap format: roughly 15–40p a patch, though pack prices move. COSRX Master Patch (Amazon UK) is a 24-patch mixed-size sheet, often listed around £5.99. The mix helps when you want a smaller disc under makeup. Check the retailer on the day. Mighty Patch Original is a 36-pack of one everyday size, at Boots, Hero UK, Tesco, and Amazon UK. Stockist notes are on where to buy hydrocolloid patches.
More notes sit in all guides. If you are still deciding between a cheap disc and a cone, use hydrocolloid vs microdart.
